Mr. Dawa Tshering, the Executive Director of the Bhutan Stroke Foundation (BSF) presented on the foundation’s vision, objectives, and the challenges faced to the stroke team members of the hospital today. He shared his personal experience as a caregiver for his wife, who suffered a stroke, which motivated him to establish BSF in 2019 with other volunteers, professionals, stroke survivors and families. BSF is officially registered as a Civil Society Organization in 2020.

Stroke is a critical medical condition caused by interrupted blood supply to the brain, affecting approximately 17 million people globally each year, resulting in 6 million deaths and 5 million disabilities. It is the second leading cause of death and third leading cause of disability worldwide, with an increasing incidence in Bhutan in recent years.

The consequences of stroke include lifelong paralysis, diminished quality of life, financial burdens, mental health issues, and dependency on caregivers, but 90% of strokes are preventable. Key modifiable risk factors include diet and exercise.

Immediate medical attention is crucial if you experience sudden loss of balance, drooping of one side of the face, weakness in limbs, or speech difficulties.
